Acworth Pedestrian Bridge Demo
During the last two weeks in April, Penhall crews from the Atlanta branch performed the demolition of a 900 SF x 6″ thick concrete bridge deck which required hand removal and disposal of 16 CY of rubble and steel rebar. The concrete had to be removed due to low compressive strength. The primary challenge was that half of the bridge was built over an active CSX railroad with as many as 10 -15 trains passing under the work area each day. Working over the railroad required close coordination with CSX. Other challenges were that the concrete was poured on a “dovetail” profile metal corrugated decking which made the breaking and removal difficult.
- Demo of 900 SF X 6” thick concrete
- Removal and disposal of 16 CY of rubble and steel rebar
- The main breaking was done using a robotic breaker supplemented with 30 and 90 lb. hand held jackhammers.
- concrete was then loaded into wheelbarrows and dumped over the edge of the bridge at a designated safe opening into a steel dump hopper
- All of the work required fall protection and was performed safely by the crew with no near misses.
